It was the early 1990’s when LCIF decided to become a world player in the campaign against preventable blindness. It was the right thing to do and we were big enough, both in number of members and in heart. The $150 million needed was divided by the number of members over a 3-year period that averaged $50 per year per member. The money was raised, and, because of the efforts of the Lions during the 90’s, 24 million people not only have their vision but their capability of self-sustainment. Now that money is completely gone, but with our remarkable record of costing only $6 per person. What a proud and remarkable use of our personal giving!!!! The money is gone, but is blindness gone also? Sadly no. Therefore, we as Knights of the Blind, have again answered the call of Helen Keller to combat this monumental problem. Campaign SightFirst II will ask us to step up to the plate financially to match what was given 15 years ago. Our Lions then actually gave more, based on the rate of inflation. CSFII is asking again for each of you, personally and as a part of the club, to give an average of $50 per member per year over the 3 years of current campaign, resulting in a 3-year total of $150 times the one million Lions we believe will answer the call. Big numbers, but, when you consider it on a daily basis, it is about 15 cents for each of us. Who would deny a person their vision because we could not spare a nickel and a dime a day? Personal and club gifts are eligible for Melvin Jones Fellowships. Like you, I am proud to say I am a Lion, and I take great pride in our accomplishments. It is not easy to ask for money. Yet, when I see the results you and I can achieve together when we pool our resources, it makes it a little easier for me to ask for your help. Please work with your CSFII Group Coordinators when they call on your club. Help make their job a bit easier, as they are volunteers just like you. Thanks for supporting this project that tells the world who we are, and why we proudly wear the Lions Emblem. -PID Scott Neely
