Printing and Viewing Adobe Acrobat Files

Some Lions are still having problems getting Adobe Acrobat files, like our newsletter, to open up, so here again is what Lion Vicki Propps found out last year from Irene Papaurelis of the International Info Systems Support Team.

First, make sure you have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer by going to Start > Programs and seeing if it is listed.  Make sure your have at least Adobe 5.x or higher.

If you don’t have the Reader or your version is lower than 5.0, go to www.adobe.com. On the left hand side, click the Adobe Reader button.  The default download is for Windows XP.  If you don’t have XP, make sure to choose another version.

Tip: Uncheck the Yahoo Toolbar and Photo Shop Album software downloads.  They take up room on your computer, slow down your processing rate, and add cookies and spy ware to your drive.

Once you know you’ve got Adobe Reader, and you’re still having problems, you may be opening the files from your Web Browser instead of through Adobe. The fix is just takes a few steps.

For Adobe Acrobat or Reader 6.x or 7.x:

Open Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader

Choose Edit > Preferences > Internet

Deselect “Display PDF in Browser”

For Adobe Acrobat or Reader 5.x:

Open Acrobat or Reader

Choose Edit > Preferences > General

Click Options in the list in the Preferences dialog Box.

Deselect “Display PDF in Browser”

Click OK.

If you are able to print the document, but the data is garbled, click File from the menu bar, choose Print, click the “Advanced” button, and check the box labeled “Print as Image.”

These steps should fix any problems you were having with viewing or printing PDF documents. If it doesn’t, give me a call or email.
